If each allele is either dominant or recessive there are 4 possible outcomes for each pair of alleles therefore, if they are independent of each other there are 4^x possibilities. However Tt is the same as tT so there are 3^x different possibilities and, if only the phenotype matters, there are 2^x possibilities.
