Phosphorylating/changing groups on a protein?

It depends on the surrounding protein environment. For example if the phosphate group is added near a positively charged motiff then a repulsive effect could be observed. A phosphate group is negatively charged. Same thing for a highly charged group... it all depends on the surrounding environment where the group is added.
