Can someone please explain this to me?

What do people mean when they talk about one candidate winning the popular vote, but losing presidency due to the electoral vote (or vice versa)? I understand that this happened between Al Gore and George Bush, but I don't understand why or how it works...what's the difference between popular vote and electoral vote?
